New Zealand vs South Africa
Auckland, New Zealand – New Zealand extended their dominant run in the tri-series, securing an unbeaten victory by narrowly defeating South Africa by three runs in a tense final today. A compelling batting display, spearheaded by solid half-century contributions from Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, saw the Black Caps post a challenging 180/5 after being asked to bat first.
The chase of 181 proved to be a rollercoaster of emotions for both sides. South Africa’s innings began with early momentum as Lhuan-dre Pretorius got them off to a strong start. However, disciplined bowling from New Zealand, particularly from Jacob Duffy in the second over, kept the scoring in check despite a slightly expensive third over.
South Africa’s discipline with the new ball left much to be desired, with Nandre Burger’s wild delivery in the second over setting a precedent for loose bowling throughout the PowerPlay, allowing New Zealand’s openers to score freely. Despite this, Senuran Muthusamy provided South Africa with their first breakthrough, dismissing Tim Seifert after New Zealand had reached a comfortable 52/0 in the first six overs. However, this wicket failed to shift the momentum decisively in South Africa’s favor.

New Zealand’s introduction of spin after the PowerPlay, however, proved counter-productive. Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell conceded 27 runs in the 7th and 8th overs, with five wides contributing to the tally. Even the reintroduction of Milne to curb the scoring didn’t yield the desired results, as Pretorius continued to find the boundaries.
Pretorius notched up a swift fifty with a magnificent six off Bracewell, but his aggressive knock was cut short just three balls later when he was stumped. New Zealand capitalized on this, seizing control by dismissing Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, and Rubin Hermann by the 16th over, despite their struggles to contain the boundaries.
The momentum swung back and forth. While runs flowed easily for New Zealand early on, South Africa fought back with regular wickets. Conway fell just shy of his fifty in the 12th over, followed by Ravindra in the 14th. Mark Chapman struggled, and Ravindra too, like Conway, fell three runs short of his fifty in the 17th over.
The climax of the match was nothing short of dramatic. South Africa found themselves needing 41 runs from 24 deliveries at 139/4, with New Zealand edging further ahead after Milne conceded just five in the 17th over. Dewald Brevis then answered South Africa’s call to arms, smashing three timely sixes in the 18th and 19th overs, which both yielded 15 runs each.
With just seven runs to defend in the final over, the pressure mounted. Brevis, aiming to finish with a flourish, was brilliantly caught by Bracewell on the cow corner fence. The drama intensified when Bracewell dropped a tough chance off the very next delivery, and then, in a stunning moment, Daryl Mitchell held on to a blinder down at long-on to dismiss George Linde. Ultimately, Senuran Muthusamy was unable to lay a bat on a slower short ball from Henry, needing four off the final delivery, confirming New Zealand’s unblemished tri-series triumph.
