Rohit Sharma Poised to Dethrone Afridi: The ‘Hitman’ Nears Crown as ODI’s Ultimate Six-Hitter

Rohit Sharma on the verge of making history: On his way to becoming the new six-hitting king of ODI cricket

The One Day International (ODI) cricket landscape is on the verge of witnessing a historic shift in power-hitting. Indian captain Rohit Sharma is poised to break one of the most coveted records in the format: the record for most sixes hit. Currently, Sharma is just a few hits away from surpassing legendary Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi.

This impending achievement puts him at the top of the list of the top five greatest hitters in 50-over cricket history. Here are the batsmen who have lit up stadiums with their power.

1. Shahid Afridi (Pakistan)

For years, Shahid “Boom Boom” Afridi has held the top spot. Known for his explosive, all-or-nothing batting style, Afridi finished his ODI career with 351 sixes.  He achieved this feat in a career spanning 369 innings.

2. Rohit Sharma (India)

After Afridi, Rohit Sharma is second. The “Hitman” has amassed 349 sixes and is now just two sixes away from equaling the record and three sixes away from taking it completely. What makes Sharma’s success even more special is his skill; he achieved this feat in just 276 innings significantly fewer than the current record holder. The cricket world is hopeful that Sharma will break this record in his very next ODI match.

3. Chris Gayle (West Indies)

In third place is the “Universe Boss” himself, Chris Gayle. This West Indies powerhouse, renowned for his effortless and towering shots, has terrorized bowlers throughout his career, hitting 331 sixes in 301 ODI innings.

 4. Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka)

Another pioneer of aggressive batting at number four is Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya. This opening batsman, who redefined batting in the first 15 overs, hit 270 sixes in his 433-innings career.

5. Mahendra Singh Dhoni (India)

The top five includes India’s legendary captain and finisher, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. “Captain Cool,” known for his signature helicopter shot, smashed 229 sixes in 297 innings during his illustrious career.

While this list includes some of the game’s most destructive batsmen, all eyes are now on Rohit Sharma. With Afridi’s long-standing record firmly within his grasp, fans eagerly await his next performance at the crease, poised to crown him the new king of six-hitting batsmen.
