BSNL Rolls Out Indigenous 4G: Future-Ready, Green, and Aiming for a 5G Leap

BSNL Launches Comprehensive 4G Network

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched BSNL’s 4G network across India. It will initially be rolled out to 98,000 locations, providing high-speed 4G internet in both villages and cities. BSNL’s self-developed 4G technology makes it unique, eliminating dependence on foreign vendors, and demonstrating India’s growing capabilities in the telecommunications sector.

Future Ready: 5G Upgrade

BSNL’s new 4G infrastructure is future-ready, capable of seamlessly upgrading to 5G services. With cutting-edge software and an open radio network design, BSNL aims to deliver advanced connectivity to customers as soon as the 5G rollout begins. This positions the company in a strong position to compete as India moves towards widespread adoption of 5G services by 2025.

 Competitive Landscape: Behind Private Giants

Despite new launches, BSNL still lags behind major private companies like Jio and Airtel, which launched 5G services in 2022. BSNL’s late entry is due to previous delays in spectrum allocation, outdated technology, and prolonged financial struggles. Customer migration to private providers due to network issues continues to pose challenges.

Solar Power for New Towers

BSNL is embracing sustainability by enabling its new towers to be powered by solar energy. This initiative will make BSNL one of India’s greenest telecom networks, reducing operating costs and promoting environmental protection.

Declining Customer Base Amid Competition

Recent reports from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) show a steady decline in BSNL’s subscriber base. As of July 2025, BSNL had only 10.1 million mobile users, significantly lagging behind its competitors.  Jio and Airtel’s market dominance remains strong, with both companies collectively controlling over 80% of the sector.

Toward the Future

BSNL’s ambitious push for indigenous technology, rural connectivity, and green energy solutions marks a significant chapter for public sector telecommunications in India. The success of this initiative will play a key role in determining BSNL’s future in the face of increasing competition and the evolving digital landscape.
