Gill to lead revamped Indian squad for West Indies Tests; Padikkal and Reddy included

Team Announced for West Indies Tests

The BCCI has officially ushered in a new era for its Test team, appointing Shubman Gill as captain for the upcoming two-Test home series against the West Indies. The announcement, made by selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar, also confirmed veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja as vice-captain.

The 15-member squad includes new faces and signals a clear shift, with top-order batsman Devdutt Padikkal and promising all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy included in the squad. They replace Karun Nair and Abhimanyu Easwaran, who have been dropped.

The full squad is as follows: Shubman Gill (captain), Ravindra Jadeja (vice-captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudarshan, Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel (wicketkeeper), N. Jagadeesan (wicketkeeper), Nitish Reddy, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.

Reward for form, message for poor performance

The selection committee has sent a strong message based on recent performances. Karun Nair has been dropped from the squad after a difficult tour of England, where he scored only 205 runs in eight innings at an average of just over 25, including one half-century. Agarkar was clear in his assessment that the panel “expected more” from the 33-year-old, noting his weakness against fast bowlers even on flat pitches.

In his place, Devdutt Padikkal has been rewarded for his excellent form, including a recent 150-run innings for India A against Australia A.

The selectors are also backing Sai Sudharsan for the crucial third spot, indicating a willingness to give him a “long-term chance” to cement his place in the team. This comes at a time when India is looking to fill the void left by the recent retirements of veterans like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin.

All-rounder Promise and Wicketkeeping Options

One of the most exciting players is Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has been selected for his first Test series. Agarkar praised the young all-rounder’s potential, noting his impressive bowling and batting under pressure at Lord’s. “If he develops into the all-rounder you’re always looking for, it gives you a lot of flexibility,” Agarkar said.

Rishabh Pant is still recovering from a fractured right foot, so Dhruv Jurel and N. Jagadeesan will share wicketkeeping duties. Pant is expected to be “100% fit” by the start of the South Africa series. Jurel strengthened his claim with a brilliant 140-run innings against Australia A.

Bumrah’s return bolsters the fast bowling attack

A significant positive for the team is that lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah is available and “ready and eager” for both Test matches. After a five-week break since the England tour, his presence will be crucial.

He will be accompanied by Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. Krishna, who had a mixed tour of England, taking 14 wickets at a high average, delivered a match-winning performance with eight wickets in the final Test, retaining his place.

Meanwhile, fast bowlers Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh have missed out on selection, as the selectors chose a team suited to the home conditions that are less favorable to fast bowlers.

Agarkar concluded by stressing the importance of every match in the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, and described the defeat to New Zealand in the last home series as a “warning.” “All these four Test matches that we will play at home… become very important,” he said. The first Test against the West Indies begins in Ahmedabad on October 2.
