Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 for her unwavering and peaceful fight for democracy in her home country. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the decision on Friday, October 10, 2025, recognizing her as a “brave and committed champion of peace” who keeps the “flame of democracy burning amid a growing darkness.”
The Committee lauded Machado for her pivotal role in uniting a once-fragmented political opposition around the common cause of free and fair elections. Her work, they noted, embodies the core principles of democracy-defending popular rule even in the face of disagreement.

The Nobel Committee highlighted the grim context of Machado’s activism. Machado’s courage was on full display during the 2024 election cycle. After the ruling regime barred her from running as the opposition’s presidential candidate, she threw her support behind a new representative, Edmundo González Urrutia.
In a remarkable display of civic mobilization, her movement trained and organized hundreds of thousands of volunteers to act as election observers. Despite the risk of harassment, arrest, and torture, these citizens monitored polling stations across the country.
