B. Sudarshan Reddy
New Delhi: The opposition’s INDIA bloc has announced former Supreme Court judge, B. Sudarshan Reddy, as its joint candidate for the Vice President’s post. The announcement was made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.
According to Kharge, the election for the Vice President is an “ideological battle,” and the decision to nominate a joint candidate was made after a consensus among all opposition parties. The move aims to present a strong challenge in the upcoming election. Reddy is scheduled to file his nomination on August 21.
The announcement comes after the post of Vice President became vacant following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhad due to health reasons last month. The election for the new Vice President is scheduled to take place on September 9, with August 21 as the last date for filing nominations.
Meanwhile, the NDA has nominated C.P. Radhakrishnan, the current Governor of Maharashtra, as its candidate for the same post. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh had previously contacted opposition leaders, including Kharge, to seek support for a unanimous decision.
