India vs England: India Deny England Series Win with Heroic Batting Display in 4th Test

India vs England: Centuries from Gill, Jadeja and Sundar played a key role in India getting a draw

The fourth Test against England ended in a draw thanks to the brilliant resilience of the Indian batsmen, led by centuries from skipper Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, keeping the hopes of keeping the series alive.

After suffering a massive defeat by 311 runs in the first innings, the Indian team batted memorably in their second innings to stop England from winning the series. The challenge was too big for the home team after England posted a mammoth 669 runs in their first innings in reply to India’s 358.

The foundation for this big win for India was laid on the final day. Playing ahead at 174/2, skipper Shubman Gill and KL Rahul continued to hold on to the English attack.  The pair batted for 421 balls for the third wicket to forge a crucial 188-run partnership—a new record for the most balls faced by an Indian pair in a Test against England, surpassing the previous record of Rahul Dravid and Sanjay Bangar since 2002. While Rahul was unlucky to get out for 90, Gill held the innings together.

Shubman Gill Equals Sir Don Bradman Record

Captain Gill went on to score a brilliant 103. It was his fourth century of the series, a remarkable feat that saw him equal Sir Don Bradman’s 1947 record for most centuries in a Test series by a captain.

After Gill’s departure, the onus fell on Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. He was well supported by Washington Sundar, who achieved a personal milestone with his maiden Test century and finished with 107*. Their combined effort saw India secure a score of 425/4, but the match was declared a draw.

Despite this draw, England maintain a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Now all eyes are on the final and decisive Test, which is scheduled to start at The Oval from August 31.
