Death Number rises in Nepal, 22 people have lost their lives in protests so far
A wave of unrest has swept Nepal following the government’s sudden decision to block major social media platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube. Thousands of citizens took to the streets and expressed anger, condemning the blanket ban on digital platforms essential for everyday communication.
Security tightened at India-Nepal border
The crisis in Nepal has had ramifications beyond its borders. Following intelligence reports, Indian authorities have increased vigilance in five states bordering Nepal. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, West Bengal and Sikkim were put on high alert to ensure security and prevent the potential consequences of unrest in the neighbouring country from escalating.
Cabinet reshuffle and minister’s resignation
With the protests growing in scale and intensity, Nepal’s cabinet called an emergency meeting to ease the mounting pressure. The discussions culminated in a dramatic development—the resignation of the home minister. The move exposed tensions within the government and indicated deep internal disagreements over crisis management.
Border Indian states tighten measures
India shares an open border with Nepal, but following the unrest, authorities in nearby states stepped up surveillance and policing measures. Special surveillance was set up in border districts known for regular cross-border movement, aimed at preventing any kind of unrest or illegal activity.
Clashes between protesters and security forces
Major rallies in Kathmandu turned violent as protesters clashed with the police. The clashes led to lathicharge, detentions and injuries. The number of patients admitted to hospitals rose, reflecting a sharp rise in casualties during these bitter clashes. This volatile situation led authorities to impose a curfew around essential government buildings.
Protests led by grassroots movements
The protests were fuelled by groups such as ‘Hami Nepal’, which comprises former officials and social activists. Their organised campaigns, including rallies and digital advocacy, played a key role in mobilising widespread resistance against the government’s decision. The movement demanded the immediate lifting of the ban on social media and restoration of free communication.
Enforcement of curfew and restrictions
As tensions escalated, the local administration declared curfew in capitals, government offices and high-security areas. Several entry points and routes were barricaded and strict restrictions on movement were imposed to maintain public order. Emergency services were kept on standby to deal with any potential crisis.
