Clash of Legendary Stars: Rajinikanth to Star in Kamal Haasan’s ‘Thalaivar 173’

‘Thalaivar 173’

In one of the most significant announcements in modern Indian cinema, superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan are set to collaborate on a new historical film. The project, tentatively titled ‘Thalaivar 173,’ will star Rajinikanth in the lead role and be directed by popular filmmaker Sundar C.

The news, announced in a press release on November 5th, confirms that the film will be produced under Kamal Haasan’s prestigious Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI) banner. This project is not just a film, but a celebration of “five decades of friendship and brotherhood” between two legends of Indian cinema.

Key details about this landmark project are as follows:

* Team: The film combines Rajinikanth’s “magnetic screen presence” with Sundar C.’s direction, all under a production “conceived by Kamal Haasan and R. Mahendran.”

* Banner: This project celebrates 44 years of Rajkamal Films International.

* Release: The film will be released by Red Giant Movies and is scheduled for Pongal 2027.

A Historic Reunion

This collaboration marks a historic reunion for Rajinikanth and Haasan, who are working together after 46 years.

The choice of director is particularly poignant. Sundar C. has the rare distinction of directing career-defining films for both superstars: he directed Rajinikanth in the blockbuster Arunachalam and Kamal Haasan in the critically acclaimed Anbe Sivam.

After months of speculation on social media about other directors like Lokesh Kanagaraj or Pradeep Ranganathan, Sundar C.’s confirmation has excited fans, as he has a good track record with both actors.

The “Full Biscuit” Moment

This project had been in the works for some time.  Kamal Haasan first hinted at this collaboration at the NEXA SIIMA Awards 2025. He used a famous metaphor to describe their reunion:

“We became one long ago, but chose to stay apart because they kept sharing a biscuit… We both wanted a whole biscuit, and we got it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now, we are satisfied with just half a biscuit again, so we have come together.”

Later, on September 17, Rajinikanth confirmed to reporters that the project was in the planning stages, saying, “If we get a good script, the film will start. We are planning it, but hopefully we will get a good story.”

Now that the script and director have been finalized, this “historic collaboration” is officially moving forward, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated films of this decade.
