RCB vs KKR IPL 2025 match cancelled due to incessant rain in Bengaluru
The much-awaited Indian Premier League IPL 2025 encounter between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was called off without a single ball being bowled on Saturday, May 17 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium due to incessant and heavy rain. The rain had a huge impact on the playoff hopes of both the teams.
Incessant rain started in Bengaluru around 6 PM and continued throughout the evening, which prevented the toss from taking place. The match officials conducted multiple inspections, but the outfield remained unplayable. Despite the stadium’s subair drainage system, the heavy rain made it impossible for the match to start within the stipulated time frame. The cut-off time for the five-over match was 10:56 PM IST, but the rain did not seem to stop and the game was officially called off at 10:24 PM IST.
The cancellation resulted in both teams sharing one point each. The result proved to be a decisive blow to Kolkata Knight Riders’ playoff hopes. Needing a win to stay in contention, a point meant they were mathematically out of the playoff race, becoming the fourth team to be eliminated from the tournament from IPL 2025.
For Royal Challengers Bangalore, the shared point put them on top of the points table with 17 points from 12 matches, moving them closer to making it to the playoffs of IPL 2025. While the win had guaranteed their qualification, they now need one more win from their remaining two matches to officially seal their place in the top four.
The rain was a disappointment for fans, especially those who had gathered at the stadium, some of whom wore white jerseys to pay tribute to Virat Kohli after his recent retirement from Tests. The cancellation also made the resumption of the IPL season after a short hiatus disappointing.
